Affect: To assess emotional well being a translated version of the PANAS (Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988) was used within the intensive protocol (IP). Participants were asked on a five-point Likert-Scale (5 rated as "very frequently", to 1 as "rarely") how often they had experienced 20 emotions within the previous year: 10 items each assessed positive and negative affect. Higher scores on every item indicate higher positive/negative affect. Consistent with other findings in the literature, in BASE the two dimensions of affect were independent of each other.

Furthermore, at T7 an additional 8 positive and 9 negative items from the PANAS-X (Watson & Clark, 1994) and from the emotion litererature (Carstensen et al. 2000, Diener & Larson, 1984) were used to assess pleasantness and unpleasantness. The same five-point Likert-Scale (5 rated as "very frequently", to 1 as "rarely") was used.

Literature: Kunzmann, 1998; Kunzmann, U., Little, T. D., & Smith, J., 2000, 2002; Smith & Baltes, 1996, 1999; Smith, Fleeson, Geiselmann, Settersen, & Kunzmann, 1996, 1999; Staudinger, Freund, Linden, & Maas, 1996, 1999.
